In the 2023 edition of the QS World University rankings by subject, which evaluates the international reputation and scientific quality of higher education and research institutions around the world, UGA has improved or remained stable in 17 of the 21 disciplines in which it is ranked. In the top 50 for 3 disciplines, it ranks 33rd among the world's best universities in Geology, 35th in Geophysics, and 39th in Earth and Marine Sciences. More broadly, UGA has moved up in this international ranking to 70th place in 2023 in one of the five major fields evaluated: Natural Sciences.
Ranked in the top 50 for three disciplines in the major field of Natural Sciences, where it is 70th in the world, UGA has once again made progress this year by being ranked in three additional disciplines: Archeology, Architecture and Politics and International Studies. Out of the 21 disciplines in which it is ranked, of the 54 evaluated by the QS by subjects, it has progressed in 12 of them and remained stable in 5.
At the national level, it ranks 5th in France and 1st in the regions in the Natural Sciences field, after Sorbonne University (13th), PSL (14th), Université Paris Saclay (19th), Institut Polytechnique de Paris (21st) and ahead of Université Paris Cité (72nd).
This progress is the result of the very high level of its research teams and the relevance of the scientific policy developed at UGA in close collaboration with the national research organizations present in the Grenoble Alpes region.
How the QS World University rankings by subject work
The QS World University rankings by subject list the world's top universities in five broad subject areas covering 54 topics. These rankings are designed to help prospective students identify the world's best universities in their chosen field, in response to the high demand for subject comparisons.
Each subject area ranking is compiled from four sources. The first two are QS' global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess the international reputation of institutions in each subject area. The other two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per article and the h-index in the subject area. These data come from Elsevier's Scopus, the most comprehensive research citation database in the world.
