Anchored in its territory, multidisciplinary and open to the international, Université Grenoble Alpes brings together the main public higher education institutions of Grenoble and Valence. In association with the national research organizations and the international research facilities present on its territory, it builds its innovation policy on a global scale. As a driving force for progress and a laboratory for initiatives, it collaborates with its many partners to accompany the evolution of society.

Ambition and strategy

Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is the result of the coming together of stakeholders in higher education and research in Grenoble and Valence.

Université Grenoble Alpes brings together 59,000 students including 10,500 international students, 3,000 PhD students, and 7,800 staff on several campuses.

Staff and students, as well as representatives from partners institutions play a role in UGA governing system, which takes form in 4 main central governing bodies.

The initiative of excellence

The Idex project "Université Grenoble Alpes: university of innovation" was awarded the "Initiative d'excellence" label in 2016 as part of the national investment program for the future (PIA). This distinction is reserved for a dozen university sites in France.

Mainly located in the Grenoble area, Université Grenoble Alpes counts a total of 13 geographical sites.

  • Shanghai 2022 ranking: UGA among the 150 best universities in the world and in the top 5 French universities
    Université Grenoble Alpes has maintained its position in the top 150 of the Shanghai 2022 ranking of the world's best universities, published on 15 August. At the national level, UGA has also maintained its position as the 5th largest university in France and 1st university in the region, alongside the universities of Aix-Marseille and Strasbourg, after the four institutions in the Paris region: Université Paris Saclay, Sorbonne Université, PSL and Université de Paris.

  • The label "Initiative of excellence" (Idex)
    The Idex project "Université Grenoble Alpes: university of innovation" was labeled an "Initiative of excellence" in 2016 by the government, a distinction reserved for a dozen university sites in France. In this framework, numerous projects are being conducted to strengthen training (teaching content and pedagogical processes) and promote student success.
