Green Digital Policy
Although the University of Grenoble Alpes has set up a time charter to encourage the community to separate professional time from personal time, digital use has not yet been the subject of an ambitious environmental and climatic treatment.
The ever-increasing place of this sector in professional activities requires an awareness of its effects in terms of greenhouse gases. To date, digital technology is estimated to be responsible for 3.7% of the world's GHG emissions, while aviation accounts for 4.7%. It is therefore essential for the university to conduct a policy aimed at raising awareness among its agents (more than 6,000 people) and users (nearly 50,000 people), to limit the renewal of terminals and improve the energy performance of data centres and networks, with a view to encouraging the emergence of more ecologically virtuous uses of digital technology.Policy to raise awareness of the environmental impact of digital technology
As digital pollution is invisible, it is essential to conduct awareness campaigns to encourage users to adopt eco-responsible digital actions. This requires a better understanding of the carbon impact of individual practices and of the group to which one belongs.Policy to limit the renewal of terminals and improve the energy performance of data centers and networks
A more sober policy involves limiting the renewal of terminals and a policy of purchasing reconditioned and eco-labeled terminals, strengthening the complementarity between data centers and renewable energies and improving the sobriety of networks.Policy in favor of ecologically virtuous digital uses
The new generations must be targeted so that they integrate practices that allow the development of a sober digital environment. Limiting the use of videos is also necessary. Improving the eco-design of digital sites and services must become widespread. Published on July 31, 2020
