Methodology of the Shanghai Subject Ranking
This year’s ranking covers 57 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences, including two new fields: artificial intelligence and robotics. In total, around 2,000 universities from 92 countries and regions are included in the 2025 edition of the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
The ranking considers the following research performance indicators: Number of scientific publications in a given field ; Impact of these publications and their citation count ; Number of papers published in top-tier scientific journals ; International nature of the published results (number of international teams involved) ; Scientific awards received by researchers from the evaluated universities.
