TIDAC - Texts, Images and Documents of Classical Antiquity

Multidisciplinar approach to classical studies
The thematic program covers 4 different Masters courses, all of which are focused on the study of societies in Classical Antiquity. These studies are based on sources that share specific features that distinguish them from historical documents from other periods, but which also bring them closer together, justifying a common study overriding the separation into 4 different fields.
The Texts, Images and Documents of Classical Antiquity thematic program focuses on sources from Classical Antiquity. It seeks to create multidisciplinary practices to develop an articulated, complex and reflexive vision of the objects common to students working on Classical Antiquity: sources and documents (iconographic, written and material). Literary sources will obviously be taken into consideration, as the transmission and establishment of tradition are major issues, but other types of sources such as inscriptions, coins and graffiti may also be concerned by the same reasoning. The relationship with images will be considered, as images are a place for the creation, reception and re-elaboration of mythological and ideological discourse. The program incorporates a strong dimension of historical anthropology. The aim of this approach is to make our knowledge of the ancient past more epistemologically sound: a more in-depth study of the entire chain of production of written or iconographic documents, and of the material and intellectual conditions of their creation, will provide the epistemological and anthropological depth necessary for a proper understanding of fields of knowledge which, while appearing to be close to current academic disciplines (history, philosophy, etc.), in reality stem from distant cultural worlds whose otherness must be understood and described.

Each year, the thematic program includes a back-to-school day, three technical seminars and a thematic school. Enrolled students will also carry out a tutored project over the four semesters.
