Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has retained its position within the top 150 of the 2024 Shanghai Ranking of the world's best universities, which was published on August 15th. Nationally, UGA also maintains its status as the 5th best French university and the top university outside the Paris region, alongside Aix-Marseille University and the University of Strasbourg, following the four institutions in the Île-de-France region: Université Paris-Saclay, PSL University, Sorbonne University, and Paris Cité.
UGA's strong performance in the 2024 edition of the Shanghai Global Ranking confirms the quality of research conducted within its research structures and national research organizations. These results highlight the relevance of UGA's scientific strategy, implemented with its partners, to enhance research and innovation addressing societal and environmental challenges and supporting the development of its territories.
Established in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU, Academic Ranking of World Universities) distinguishes the top 1,000 higher education institutions out of over 2,500 universities considered this year. It is based on six criteria, including the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals among faculty members or alumni, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, and the number of publications in scientific journals such as Nature and Science. The sum of all indicators is related to the number of full-time equivalent permanent academic staff, with only faculty members being counted in France.
