Chemistry, Biology, Health (CBS)
This research organization brings together laboratories in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy. Its work covers the entire spectrum from fundamental to applied and clinical research. It relies on a strong collaboration with the CHU Grenoble Alpes and the Établissement français du sang.
Strategic axis
Structural and Integrative Cellular Biology
This axis explores the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules in order to understand their functions at the atomic and molecular levels, as well as in their cellular environment or within living organisms. It includes a cross-cutting activity to the different axes of the drug discovery cluster, from the identification of biological targets in human health, to the selection and design of therapeutic molecules. The complexity of the questions posed requires the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach, at the frontiers of Biology, Physics and Chemistry, as well as very powerful analytical means, covering different scales of resolution.
Molecular, biomotivated and sustainable Chemistry: the challenge
Chemistry must face two fundamental challenges: designing its future without fossil fuels and integrating current knowledge of molecular biology to design new, more efficient bio-molecular systems. The aim of this axis is the design, synthesis and application of new molecular architectures, in particular bio-inspired and bio-targeted, in the context of translational research on 3 subjects linked to the maintenance and progress of human society: energy, environment and health.
Chronic diseases, cancers
Université Grenoble Alpes conducts fundamental preclinical and clinical research, particularly in the fields of chronic diseases, rare diseases and cancer. It relies on interdisciplinary approaches and on the construction of a continuum of scientific expertise from the molecule to the population, covering genetics, epigenetics, cell biology, cell-matrix interactions, immunology, metabolism, the study of host-pathogen interactions, and environmental epidemiology. It benefits from the many links forged between the basic research teams and the CHU-GA for translational research "from molecule to patient".
Neurosciences
This axis explores the development and functioning of the nervous system, peripheral and central, normal and pathological, from the molecule to human cognition. Multiple interdisciplinary approaches are developed in order to find therapeutic or compensatory solutions to major pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, retinal degeneration), neuropathies, epilepsy or severe forms of disability (stroke, cranial trauma). They combine the disciplines of cellular and Molecular Biology, Neurophysiology, Clinical Neurology, Neurotechnology, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science, Signal and Image Processing, and Artificial Intelligence.
Technology(ies) for health and well-being
Technologies for health and well-being aims at developing innovative medical devices and biotherapies through bioengineering processes. It also concerns the research of diagnostic tools and biomarkers as well as the development of innovative cellular systems in the form of spheroids, organoids or organs on chips, to understand physiological and pathological processes and to test new therapeutic molecules, with a view to personalized medicine. It also relies on the use of digital data on a large scale thanks to artificial intelligence tools.
