In the 2025 edition of the QS World university rankings by subject, which assesses the international reputation and scientific quality of higher education and research establishments worldwide, Université Grenoble Alpes continues to progress, being ranked in 35 of the 55 disciplines evaluated. This puts it in 4th place among French universities after the Parisian universities PSL, Sorbonne Universités and Paris-Saclay, and in 1st place among regional universities. It also improved its ranking in geology and geophysics, reaching 22nd and 23rd place worldwide respectively.
In this new ranking, which covers 1,757 institutions in 151 countries worldwide, 81 French establishments are ranked. This year, the UGA moved up in the number of disciplines evaluated, entering two new themes: Architecture and Accounting and Finance. In the top 50 for 3 disciplines, it ranks 22nd (+7) among the world's best universities in Geology, 23rd (+6) in Geophysics, and 40th in Earth and marine sciences.

This progression reflects the excellence of its research teams and the relevance of the scientific policy developed by UGA in close collaboration with the national research organizations present on its site.

Grenoble INP - UGA is also ranked first among French engineering schools in terms of the number of times it appears in the various rankings (fields and themes), and is ranked 11 times.

QS Subject Rankings methodology

The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the world's top universities in 5 broad areas covering 55 subject areas. These rankings are designed to help prospective students identify the world's best universities in their chosen field, in response to the high demand for subject comparisons. Each subject ranking is based on four sources. The first two are QS's global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess the international reputation of institutions in each subject area. The other two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per article and the h-index in the subject concerned. These data come from Elsevier's Scopus database, the world's most comprehensive research citation database.

A total of 1,757 institutions from 101 countries around the world are represented in the 55 disciplinary rankings, divided into five major fields, according to QS. A dedicated ranking is also proposed for each of these fields. 81 French institutions are ranked.
