CNRS research director at the TIMC laboratory (CNRS/UGA/Vet Agro Sup/Grenoble INP - UGA) Jocelyne Troccaz has been elected to the prestigious Académie des sciences (Academy of sciences). This distinction crowns an exceptional career in the field of surgical robotics.
Elected to the "Applications of Science" inter-section under the "Mechanical and Computer Sciences" section and co-holder of the MIAI "Computer-Assisted Medical Interventions (CAMI) Assistant" chair, Jocelyne Troccaz will be welcomed under the dome of the French Académie des Sciences during an official ceremony on 6 June, alongside the 17 fellow new members.
Trained in Computer Science and Robotics, Jocelyne Troccaz specialized in Robotics and Image Processing for medical applications in the 90s, when she joined the TIMC laboratory located in the immediate vicinity of the Université Grenoble Alpes Hospital. She was recruited by the Scientific and Medical University of Grenoble in 1984 (now UGA), then by the CNRS in 1988, and continued to teach at the university over the years.
Today, she is a CNRS research director, havong coordinated the national Labex CAMI from 2016 to 2022. Her work is dedicated to computer-assisted medical and surgical gestures, and is co-responsible for an artificial intelligence chair on this theme within the Grenoble MIAI Institute. Jocelyne works in close collaboration with clinical teams and industrial partners to ensure the outreach of her work: Hundreds of thousands of patients have benefited from the results of her research. Her scientific activity as well as her contributions to the medical field have been recognized by several awards, including Enduring Impact Award MICCAI, IEEE Fellow, MICCAI Fellow, and the National Academy of Surgery Award; she was also named a free member of this Academy, CNRS Silver Medal and Legion of Honor awardee. Her election to the French Académie des sciences in December 2022 crowns an exceptional career.

The Académie des sciences
The Academy currently has 286 members, 120 foreign associates and 63 correspondents.
Created by Colbert in 1666, the Académie des Sciences is an assembly of scientists chosen from among the most eminent French and foreign specialists. It carries out reflections on the political, ethical and societal issues raised by the great scientific questions of today and tomorrow. It examines, anticipates, explains and gives its opinion, in particular through opinions and recommendations, taking a stance when necessary. Its work aims to provide a framework of expertise, advice and warning, on which public policies can be based, and more broadly to enlighten the debates and choices of our society. The Académie des Sciences also supports research, is committed to the quality of science education and promotes scientific life at the international level.
