The Lautaret Garden is located at an elevation of 2,100 meters at the Lautaret Pass in the Hautes-Alpes. For over 100 years, this botanical garden and scientific research center has had three missions: to maintain collections of alpine plants, to facilitate scientific research, and to share knowledge with as many people as possible.
Unique plant collections
The Lautaret Garden features nearly 2,000 plant species native to mountains around the world. Open to the public from June through September, this exceptional site invites visitors to escape into nature through a rich program of activities, science workshops, and guided tours. A true center of knowledge, the garden also houses a valuable scientific heritage, including the herbarium of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes and a specialized library containing nearly 6,000 works on botany and ecology.
The Alpine Plant Collections at the Lautaret Garden
Throughout the year, the Lautaret Garden welcomes experts and scientists from a wide variety of fields. From the surrounding peaks to the laboratories, these specialists pool their expertise to analyze the mountain climate and understand the impact of human activities on these fragile environments. A wide range of research projects and experiments are continuously conducted there to better protect our environment.
A place for discussion and learning
Every year, the site welcomes tens of thousands of visitors, trains students and professionals, and actively participates in major national scientific events. Through its publications, exhibitions, and visitor facilities, it provides an ideal setting for academic seminars, regional projects, and science outreach to the general public.
Please note: There are only one or two buses per day from Grenoble or Briançon, and the schedules are not always convenient. We recommend carpooling whenever possible.
By car
The Lautaret Garden is located 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from Grenoble, 45 minutes from Bourg-d'Oisans, 30 minutes from Briançon, and 40 minutes from Valloire in the summer (the Galibier Road is closed in the winter). Once you reach the pass, turn left if you’re coming from the Grenoble direction, or right if you’re coming from Galibier or Briançon.
Please note: The Col du Lautaret is located at an altitude of 2,100 m. Snow equipment may be required in winter. Check the Info Route 05 website before heading up. It is not possible to drive up to the Jardin parking lot in winter when there is snow on the ground. Please contact us before setting out.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport is located one hour from Grenoble.
A bus line connects the airport to Grenoble. Buses depart daily, every hour between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. The trip takes approximately one hour. Get off at the “Grenoble-Gare routière” stop. Then take the Zou Express 55 bus or rent a car.

Geneva Airport is located 2 hours and 15 minutes from Grenoble.
A bus line connects the airport to Grenoble. Buses depart daily every hour between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. The trip takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Get off at the Grenoble Gare routière stop. Then take the Zou Express 55 bus or rent a car.
