The warming of the Southern Ocean, a consequence of climate change, threatens the stability of 60% of Antarctica’s ice shelves
    28 October 2025
In a study published on October 29, 2025, in the magazine Nature, an international team led by scientists from Université Grenoble Alpes and CNRS at the Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IGE - CNRS/INRAE/IRD/UGA - Grenoble INP-UGA) demonstrates that 60% of floating ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic ice sheet could be destined to disappear in the long term. These ice shelves currently slow down the ice sheet's contribution to sea-level rise. Under high anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming of 4°C by 2300, the ocean would warm, generating significant melting beneath the shelves. This would lead to their long-term disappearance and drastically reduce their braking effect, with repercussions on the rate of sea-level rise. In a scenario of substantial emissions reductions limiting global warming to 2°C, 63 out of 64 ice shelves would still have a chance of surviving until 2300 and beyond.
