An international team led by scientists from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , and the CNRS at the Grenoble Institute of Earth Sciences and the Environment (IGE - CNRS/INRAE/IRD/UGA - Grenoble INP-UGA), demonstrates in a study published on October 29, 2025, in the journal *Nature* that 60% of the floating ice shelves located around the edge of the Antarctic ice sheet could be doomed to disappear in the long term. These ice shelves currently slow the ice sheet’s contribution to sea-level rise. Under a scenario of high anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming of 12°C by 2300, the ocean would warm, causing significant melting beneath the ice shelves. This would lead to their disappearance over the long term and thus drastically reduce their role as a buffer, with repercussions on the rate of sea-level rise. In a scenario involving significant emissions reductions that limit global warming to 2°C, 63 out of 64 ice shelves would still have a chance of surviving until 2300 or even beyond.

An unprecedented study conducted at 43 European sites by an international scientific team coordinated by theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, in collaboration with the CNRS, Inserm, and the Research Institute for Development*, reveals in the journal *Nature*, on October 22, 2025, that the ability of airborne particles to generate oxidative stress in the lungs (oxidative potential, OP) varies depending on the type of environment (urban, rural, industrial, etc.) and their emission sources. In particular, this oxidative stress can be up to three times higher in urban areas with heavy road traffic than in rural areas. These findings provide concrete scientific support for establishing future European standards and guiding public health policies.

After seven years at the helm of MIAI—which was recently designated an AI Cluster—Éric Gaussier, a professor of computer science at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes and a member of the Institut Universitaire de France, is handing the reins to Philippe Wieczorek, who until now has served as director of innovation and an artificial intelligence expert at the Minalogic competitiveness cluster.

The United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation to highlight the crucial role glaciers play in regulating the climate, as well as the environmental and societal consequences of their disappearance. Scientists from the CNRS, INRAE, IRD, andUniversité Grenoble Alpes laboratories—in partnership with Grenoble INP – UGA, including many laboratories grouped within the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSUG), as well as the Ice Memory Foundation, a foundation under the auspices of the UGA Foundation, are organizing several key events starting March 20 and throughout the year to raise awareness among the general public and decision-makers about the urgent need to preserve glaciers.

The 19th edition of the University Cultural Festival at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) will explore the theme of “Passion” and will take place from March 25 to 28, 2025, featuring numerous events on campus and throughout Grenoble.

The “Pégase Pilot Center for Teacher Training and Educational Research” will inaugurate its 7th EducLab on Wednesday, November 13, in Aiton, Savoie, at Les Bartavelles School: a space for teachers, researchers, and educators to meet and collaborate. On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, the Faculty of Law will hold its bachelor’s degree commencement ceremony at the UGA Valence Drôme-Ardèche Campus. On Thursday, March 28, 2024, representatives from the French government, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Drôme Department, the City of Valence, and the University of Grenoble Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) gathered at the Briffaut campus in Valence to inaugurate the expansion of the Josette Kahane building, a historic building of the UGA’s Drôme Ardèche Department of Sciences. Pépite oZer, the UGA’s Student Center for Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship, is organizing the 8th edition of Proj’Expo, the student-entrepreneur fair, on April 4, 2024. An international scientific team, including researchers from the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre*—CNRS/IRD/UGA/Gustave Eiffel University/USMB), has just discovered a natural hydrogen reservoir deep within a chromite mine in Albania. This discovery, which opens up new prospects for the exploration of natural hydrogen, is the subject of an article published on February 8 in the journal *Science*.

On Friday, December 8, 2023, on World Climate Day, representatives from the University of Grenoble (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA), the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and Grenoble Alpes Métropole gathered to officially inaugurate the Maison Climat Planète. On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the CNRS, Inria, the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA), and Paris-Saclay University organized a morning event at the UGA campus to launch the research program “The Future of Digital Collaboration,” known as eNSEMBLE. Funded under the France 2030 initiative and operated on behalf of the government by the National Research Agency, this multidisciplinary program aims to develop the digital collaboration tools of the future. In the 2023 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates the international reputation and scientific quality of higher education and research institutions worldwide, UGA has improved or remained stable in 17 of the 21 disciplines in which it is ranked. From January 12 to 22, 2023, in Lake Placid, United States, 11 high-level student-athletes from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA) represented France at the World University Winter Games. On the slopes of the world’s largest multisport competition after the Olympic Games, the UGA athletes won five medals—nearly one-third of France’s total medal count!

After two entirely virtual editions due to the pandemic, “High School Student Day”—organized annually by the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) and the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) for high school students in the academy—is returning in person this year! The goal of the “Maturation – Pre-maturation” call for projects is to foster the creation of more research-based startups. The results were announced on January 9 during a visit to Lorraine by Sylvie Retailleau, Minister of Higher Education and Research, and Roland Lescure, Deputy Minister for Industry. The government will allocate €275 million to 17 consortia, including ExTASE, a program led—for the Pre-maturation component—by the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and, for the Maturation component, by Linksium, the technology transfer acceleration company (SATT) of Grenoble Alpes. The purpose of this consortium is to transfer more disruptive technologies to French industry as part of the France 2030 National Acceleration Strategy (SNA) titled “Advanced Energy System Technologies” (TASE).

The Training and Research Unit in Physical and Sports Sciences (UFR STAPS) at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, November 26, on the Saint-Martin-d’Hères/Gières campus. This anniversary will be an opportunity to look back on the developments of the past 50 years, from the creation of the UER EPS in 1972 to today’s UFR STAPS. In September 2022, an international jury confirmed the status of the Grenoble-based MIAI@Grenoble Alpes institute as an Interdisciplinary Institute for Artificial Intelligence, along with a €3 million increase in its budget. This international recognition of the Grenoble-based institute was followed at the start of the academic year by the approval of the EELIA-MIAI project as part of the calls for expressions of interest for France 2030’s “Skills and Professions of the Future.” This project is part of the French School of AI, created by the network of Interdisciplinary Institutes in AI in France.

Thanks to funding from the Department of Isère and the French government, the “Education Hub” has been bringing together, since the start of the 2022 academic year, in the heart of the Saint-Martin-d’Hères/Gières campus, students pursuing careers in teaching, as well as all stakeholders involved in teacher education—from elementary and secondary school levels to initial training and lifelong professional development for teachers. To inaugurate this new Center—which brings together, within three fully renovated buildings, the National Higher Institute for Teaching and Education (INSPÉ) in Grenoble, the Academic School of Continuing Education, and the House of Science in Alpes-Dauphiné—funding partners and the project manager gathered on October 18, 2022.

Led by Professor Jean-Louis Pépin at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, the SensApnea project—which aims to provide a simple diagnosis of sleep apnea to millions of people—is among the most promising European innovations recognized by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). At the 2022 “EIT Awards” finals, SensApnea received third place in the “Innovators Award” category and second place in the People’s Choice Award.

From October 12 to 21, 2022, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , and its partners are organizing festive, cultural, and academic events as part of the 6th edition of the International Days Festival. This international celebration is open to UGA students and staff, as well as the general public.

On Friday, October 14, 2022, the Law School of the “Université Grenoble Alpes ” will hold its Master’s degree commencement ceremony at Alpexpo (Alpes Congrès). The ceremony will be opened by Yassine Lakhnech, President of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA), and then co-hosted by Jean-Christophe Videlin, Dean of the School of Law, and Sébastien Le Gal, Associate Dean in charge of Master’s programs. More than 700 people are expected to attend, including 280 graduates accompanied by their loved ones, faculty members, and numerous institutional partners of the Faculty and the UGA.

The Student Center for Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (Pépite oZer) at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) is organizing a creative marathon focused on meaning—the HackaSens—on October 7 and 8 at the Espace vie étudiante (EVE) on the UGA campus in Saint-Martin-d’Hères/Gières. The event will bring together participants—including student volunteers and people of all ages eager to exchange ideas and innovate—for an entire day on Saturday, October 8. This is a first for Grenoble!

Alphanie Midelet, a UGA doctoral student at the Hypoxia and Cardiovascular and Respiratory Pathophysiology Laboratory (HP2 - Inserm, UGA) and at the company Probayes, and national winner of “My Thesis in 180 Seconds”¹ (MT180), will represent France in the international finals on October 6 at the Théâtre Outremont in Montreal. The finals will be streamed live online starting at 7:00 p.m. (1:00 a.m. on October 7, Paris time).

Starting this Monday, August 29, some 59,000 students are set to begin a new academic year at UGA on the Grenoble and Valence campuses. Among them, 10,000 new high school graduates will be welcomed with special attention. TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes invites them to explore their new student environment throughout the month of September.

The year 2022 was marked by the unveiling of *Place du Torrent*, a monumental site-specific work by the Dutch collective Observatorium. This work is part of the visual arts commissioning policy of the *Université Grenoble Alpes*, which now boasts a collection of seventy-five¹ works of art. This installation spans the approximately 3,000 square meters of the square of the same name, thereby becoming the new hub of the Saint-Martin-d’Hères/Gières campus, the main university site in the Grenoble metropolitan area. Funded as part of the “Opération Campus” initiative, “Place du Torrent” will be inaugurated with all partners on September 13. Three other major artworks will be completed by the end of 2023 on this same campus.

TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has maintained its position in the top 150 of the 2022 Shanghai Ranking of the world’s best universities, which was just released on August 15. Nationally, UGA also retains its position as the 5th-ranked French university and the top regional university, alongside the Universities of Aix-Marseille and Strasbourg, following the four institutions in the Île-de-France region: Paris Saclay University, Sorbonne University, PSL, and the University of Paris.

Ranked among the top 150 in the 2021 Shanghai Global University Rankings, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes has solidified its position in the 2022 Shanghai Subject Rankings, which were just released on July 19. It is ranked among the top 100 global universities in 15 disciplines, including five times in the top 50 and once in the top 20. This performance allows it to retain its position as the third-ranked French university—behind Université Paris Saclay and Sorbonne Université—in terms of the number of disciplines ranked in the top 100. This new ranking confirms UGA’s status as the leading research-intensive university in the region, following the universities of the Île-de-France region.

On July 18, 2022, Bruno Sportisse, President and CEO of Inria, and Yassine Lakhnech, President of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, signed a new strategic partnership framework agreement in Grenoble, thereby strengthening their collaboration. This partnership will take shape, in particular, through the creation of the “Inria Center at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes ,” which is part of Inria’s national strategy to contribute to the development of leading, world-class research universities in digital sciences and technologies.

In an article published today in the international scientific journal *PLoS ONE*, scientists from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, the CNRS, the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, Inserm, the University of Burgundy, and the Catholic University of Leuven have demonstrated for the first time that training based on motor imagery can improve language comprehension. This finding opens up promising prospects for language learning and for the treatment of certain language disorders.

On Wednesday, July 6, 2022, the Faculty of Law will hold its bachelor’s degree commencement ceremony at the UGA Valence Drôme-Ardèche Campus. The event will be presided over by the dean of the Faculty of Law, Jean-Christophe Videlin, along with his associate dean in charge of the Valence campus, Romain Bourrel. This year, the ceremony will be presided over by the president of the Valence Judicial Court, Luc Barbier. Nearly 230 people are expected to attend, including graduating students accompanied by their loved ones, faculty members, and the Faculty’s institutional partners.

The Louis Weil Amphitheater on the campus of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes will host the official inauguration ceremony for the Pégase Center on Monday, June 27, at 5:00 p.m., in the presence of the faculty and researchers involved and all partners:Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), the Grenoble School District, the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB), the University of French Guiana (UG), and the French Guiana School District.

On June 23 and 24, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes will host members of the international alliance “Campus in Campus (CiC),” of which it has been a member since 2017. This network is led by the University of Tsukuba in Japan and brings together all of its strategic partners worldwide. After two virtual editions, 38 representatives from universities in Japan, Brazil, the United States, Germany, and Kazakhstan will be welcomed this year by theUniversité Grenoble Alpes to reignite momentum around shared goals: student exchanges, degree program development, and scientific collaborations.

With 56 patent applications published in 2021, compared to 40 in 2020, UGA rose from 37th to 29th place in the INPI’s 2021 ranking of French institutions that invest the most in innovation; the university ranks first among French universities.

To enable refugee students who are recipients of the UGA Foundation’s “Students in Exile” scholarship program to continue their studies in September, intensive French courses are being organized starting in May by the University Center for French Studies (CUEF) at UGA. These courses are being funded on an exceptional basis from the Foundation’s own resources, for a total of 45,000 euros. This new emergency allocation is in addition to the ongoing fundraising campaign targeting the general public and businesses, which continues to aim to raise 50,000 euros in donations.

Last summer in Tokyo and then this winter in Beijing, the high-level student-athletes and recent graduates of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA) proudly represented their university by winning 13 Olympic and Paralympic medals. The École de Physique des Houches will celebrate more than 70 years of existence on May 23 and 24. This internationally renowned institution, founded by French physicist Cécile DeWitt-Morette, has been in existence since the summer of 1951. On this occasion, renowned scientists—including Nobel laureates and CNRS medalists—will come together to celebrate the founding of the School, which continues to train new generations of physicists and thereby contributes to the advancement of this scientific discipline.

Under an agreement signed on January 20, 2021, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble INP–UGA, the Crous Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, and the Compagnie de Chauffage committed to a major project to expand the district heating network and connect more than 100 university buildings.

According to a new study conducted by scientists¹ from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, the CNRS, Sorbonne University, and Aix-Marseille University, as well as researchers in Portugal, Belgium, Germany, and Norway, the most intense atmospheric rivers cause extreme conditions that destabilize the ice shelves of the Antarctic Peninsula. Their study will be published in the journal *Communications Earth & Environment* on April 14, 2022.

As part of the event on April 14, 2022, dedicated to biodiversity and organized by the Scientific Advisory Board of Grenoble European Green Capital, the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes —UGA), scientists from the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSUG—UGA-Grenoble INP-UGA, USMB, CNRS, IRD, INRAE, IFSTTAR), and in particular from the Alpine Ecology Laboratory (LECA – UGA, CNRS, USMB), are launching a citizen science project to protect biodiversity. The goal is to raise awareness of the richness of the natural environment around us and to help preserve it by contributing to OBIGA and its citizen-led atlas—a map showing species distribution across the Grenoble-Alpes region.

As part of the “Exceptional Lectures: Getting to Know Each Other” series, the University of Grenoble (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) will host Anne Lacaton, architect and co-winner of the 2021 Pritzker Prize, on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. in the Louis Weil Amphitheater on the Saint-Martin-d’Hères campus. She will discuss the philosophy of the Lacaton & Vassal firm, which focuses on architecture that is at once technological, innovative, and environmentally friendly. This lecture, organized in collaboration with the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Grenoble ( Université Grenoble Alpes), is free and open to everyone (registration required). In the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates the international reputation and scientific quality of higher education institutions worldwide, UGA is ranked in the top 50 for the first time in three disciplines (subjects). It ranks 33rd among the world’s best universities in Geology, 34th in Geophysics, and 41st in Earth and Marine Sciences. More broadly, UGA has moved up in this international ranking, placing 71st in 2022 in one of the five major fields evaluated: Natural Sciences.

Changing perceptions of disability and improving inclusion for children and young adults, exploring the various aspects of sports at the university level, and examining the educational implications of the Olympic movement. As part of the 2022 French University Judo Championships, three key events will be held the day before the competitions begin.

This year, the 16th edition of the University Cultural Festival will explore the theme of “Metamorphoses” and will take place from March 22 to 31, featuring numerous events across the campuses and throughout the city of Grenoble. After a difficult year in which cultural sector stakeholders had to rethink their practices and adapt to health restrictions and numerous postponements, the University of Grenoble (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) is offering the university community and the general public a program this year that is entirely in-person and free of charge.

After a first stop in Ardèche and before continuing its journey across Europe, the photography exhibition “Voices of Rural Women” will be on display in Valence from March 25 to April 11, 2022. It will be inaugurated on March 25 by Sophie Louargant—Vice President for Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes ” (UGA)—as part of UGA’s Equality Month, in the presence of Michèle Rivasi, Member of the European Parliament. A guided tour will be offered on this occasion by students in the UGA’s professional bachelor’s degree program in Tour Guiding, who also designed the exhibition layout.

Ph.D. students from the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) and the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) took the main stage at the MC2: Grenoble Auditorium on Thursday, March 17, 2022, for the academic finals of the “My Thesis in 180 Seconds”1 (MT180) competition. Once again, a large audience turned out to listen to and support the 16 finalists.

In order to provide the best possible welcome to students who have been forced to flee their countries ravaged by war or conflict, the UGA Foundation launched a “Students in Exile” fund in early 2022. This fund will award scholarships to enable these young people to enroll at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA) to continue their studies. In response to the recent emergency, the UGA Foundation launched a public fundraising campaign in early March. Already, 18,000 euros have been raised to supplement the 80,000 euros already provided by the UGA Foundation’s founders.

This year, the capital of the Alps is hosting the French University Judo Championship. On April 6 and 7, more than 300 judokas and 30 teams are expected at the Clémenceau Arena for two days of top-level competition. To kick off the event and highlight the importance of sports at the university, three special events will be held the day before the competition begins.

TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes is organizing the first conference on policies, research, and initiatives to combat social isolation on Friday, March 18, 2022, starting at 9:00 a.m. on the Saint-Martin-d’Hères campus in Grenoble.

On Thursday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m., the Grenoble Academy Final of the international competition “My Thesis in 180 Seconds”¹ (MT180) will take place at the MC2: Grenoble - Maison de la culture and will be streamed live on YouTube. At the end of this evening of science outreach, two finalists will be selected to represent the Grenoble Academy at the national level.

Following an initial stop in Grenoble at the Jardin de Ville in late 2021, the exhibition featuring 20 portraits of 21 female scientists from Grenoble will begin its tour in 2022, visiting campuses in Grenoble and Valence as well as high schools and middle schools within the Grenoble School District. During these presentations, the ambassadors from Grenoble will meet with younger generations to promote careers in science and share their professional and personal success stories.

On March 3 and 4, 2022, Strasbourg will host the inaugural session of the European Student Assembly, an initiative* endorsed as part of the French Presidency of the European Union. Nearly 275 students from 38 European student alliances will gather to discuss European issues and formulate recommendations for the European Commission. Hosted by the University of Strasbourg at the Palais Universitaire and initiated by the University of Strasbourg (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA), this event is jointly organized by the UGA, Sciences Po, and CY Cergy Paris Université under the auspices of the European university alliances EPICUR, Unite!, CIVICA, and EUTOPIA**.

This European event, designed to inform the general public about neuroscience research, provides an annual opportunity for meaningful exchanges with the neuroscience community through conferences, meetings, performances, and workshops open to everyone, held throughout the Grenoble metropolitan area and on the university campus. Titled “The Brain: An Electronic Musician,” the 2022 edition explores the connections between the brain and music! And this year, the inaugural national lecture-concert will take place in Grenoble, featuring Annie Andrieux, President of the French Society for Neuroscience and Research Director at the Grenoble Institute of Neurosciences (GIN) (UGA/Inserm/CEA). A blood marker for Parkinson’s disease has just been discovered by scientists at the Grenoble Institute of Neurosciences (GIN – Inserm/CEA/UGA) using several animal models and cohorts of newly diagnosed patients. This marker enables early detection of the disease, which is expected to have a major impact in the future on improving patient care and developing new therapies. This study, based on David Mallet’s doctoral thesis, was published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Investigation on February 16, 2022, and is the subject of a patent application.

An international team led by a scientist from the Grenoble Institute of Earth Sciences and the Environment (IGE – UGA/Grenoble-INP-UGA/CNRS/IRD), has studied lake sediments and reconstructed flood records from cold and warm periods during the Industrial Era, the last millennium, and the Holocene. This paleohydrological study, published in *Nature Geosciences* on January 27, 2022, shows that, regionally, the risk of flooding could generally decrease with global warming, with the exception of certain small mountain watersheds where extreme floods could become more frequent. These findings shed new light on the phenomenon of extreme flooding in the Alps.

Following the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the Olympic journey continues in 2022 for high-level student-athletes and alumni from the University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA). This winter, 27 of these champions will compete on the slopes at the Beijing Winter Olympics. They will represent four countries, making up a quarter of the French delegation. The University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA), along with seven other French universities, has just been awarded the “Science with and for Society” designation by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation. This designation, granted for a period of three years, is intended to encourage institutions that spearhead initiatives and foster synergies among stakeholders in scientific culture within their regions.

On Thursday, November 25, 2021, the Valencia School of Law will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the UGA Valencia Drôme-Ardèche Campus (Marguerite Soubeyran Building).

Twenty large-format portraits of 21 female scientists from Grenoble will be on display in the heart of the city garden from November 20, 2021, through December 5, 2021. This exhibition, organized by Grenoble’s scientific and academic community, invites visitors to discover women with fascinating and diverse scientific careers. The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 20, at 3:00 p.m., with all project partners in attendance.

This year, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes is partnering with the Gravillon theater company, which will present artistic experiments centered on scientific themes related to climate science. This participatory artistic project is open to members of the university community, including students, administrative staff, faculty, researchers, and faculty-researchers. Weekly dance and theater workshops will be held at the EST (Espace Scénique Transdisciplinaire) starting in early October. Sessions dedicated to practice, research, and creation will also help collectively shape this project, which will culminate in a performance on the Saint-Martin-d’Hères campus in April 2021.

The University of Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) and the French Mountain and Climbing Federation (Université Grenoble Alpes , FFME) are teaming up at the top! Following the June 8 hearing before the international jury, the government announced the final approval of the “ Université Grenoble Alpes ” Initiative for Excellence (Idex) on Wednesday, June 30, following the Cabinet meeting.

Selected from among some 50 applications, the 3EC-Sahel project “Water, Environment, and Climate Challenges in the Sahel,” led by the University of the Gulf of Aden (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA), Abdou Moumouni University (UAM) in Niamey, Niger, and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), has secured €2.78 million in funding over four years. For the first time, the University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA) invited its entire community—students and staff—to a week entirely dedicated to Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSR). Titled “UGA: A Leader in Socio-Ecological Transitions,” this inaugural week of events, discussions, scientific conferences, and online debates aimed to raise awareness, promote understanding, rally support around this central issue, and find ways to work together. The ten or so events scheduled for June 14–18, 2021, have already attracted more than 1,500 participants and visitors.

Ranked among the top 100 in the 2020 Shanghai Global University Rankings, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes has solidified its position in the 2021 Shanghai Subject Rankings, which were just released. Ranked in the top 100 of the world’s best universities across 18 disciplines—including seven in the top 50—UGA ranks third among French universities, behind Université Paris Saclay and Sorbonne Université, in terms of the number of disciplines ranked in the top 100. These latest research achievements confirm that UGA is now the top regional university outside the Île-de-France region—a distinction it has held since entering the top 100 of the Shanghai Ranking in 2020.

To meet the high demand for access to vaccination, and in anticipation of the program being opened to the general public, the UGA and the CHUGA have arranged to set aside 100 slots per day for staff and adult students at the UGA, its constituent institutions, and partner research organizations, starting Monday, May 10, with no other requirements. Vaccinations are taking place at the Alpexpo vaccination center, using mRNA vaccines (Moderna or Pfizer).

Scientists from the CNRS, the CEA, and theUniversité Grenoble Alpes confirm in PLOS Pathogens—to be published on May 20—that the COVID-19 virus can use immune cells to increase its transmission to other cells. The researchers also demonstrated that it is possible to inhibit this new mode of viral transmission using previously developed glycomimetics. This work is the result of an international collaboration with teams from Spain (Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid) and Italy (Università degli Studi di Milano).

The University of Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) and Grenoble INP, UGA’Université Grenoble Alpes , and management institute, responded to the government’s call to help businesses overcome the crisis as part of the first phase of the “France Relance” initiative aimed at creating private-sector R&D jobs. Thanks to this effort and the government’s financial contribution, 59 R&D jobs will be preserved or created at UGA’s partner companies in the Grenoble-Alpes region.

The “Exceptional Lectures: Getting to Know Each Other” series, organized by theUniversité Grenoble Alpes and funded by the IDEX program “ Université Grenoble Alpes, University of Innovation,” is resuming its schedule after a hiatus in 2020 due to the health crisis. On April 7 at 12:30 p.m., our community will welcome (virtually) Esther Duflo, co-winner in 2019—along with Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer—of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Memory of Alfred Nobel, commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics.

This year, the 15th edition of the University Cultural Festival will explore the theme “Myths” and will take place from March 24 to 31, with numerous events to discover on Radio Campus and online on UGA’s social media channels. The Students’ Imaginary Museum, created for the Festival’s opening night in partnership with the Musée de Grenoble, will be one of the highlights of the event, which will conclude on March 31 with a concert presented by UGA and the student association SEVE.

The University of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA), along with its constituent institutions, is launching an ambitious energy-efficiency renovation program for its buildings, which has just received 32 million euros in funding as part of the government’s recovery plan for the energy-efficient renovation of public buildings in higher education and research.

On Tuesday, March 9, the Alps regional final of the international “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” (MT180) competition took place as part of the 2021 edition, which was held entirely online. At the conclusion of this scientific and interactive evening on YouTube, Clara Aimar and Maxime Leprince won first and second place, respectively, as selected by the jury. Both have thus qualified for the national semifinals on April 1, where they will represent the “Universités Grenoble Alpes Savoie Mont Blanc” consortium! Claudia Terran-Escobar also took the podium with third prize from the jury, and Maxime Leprince’s presentation was recognized a second time with the People’s Choice Award.

At an official awards ceremony held on March 10, attended by Yassine Lakhnech, president of the UGA, and Patrick Lévy, president of the Foundation, seven awards ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 euros were presented to the winning organizations for their solidarity efforts during the COVID-19 health crisis.

On Thursday, March 4, 2021, the names of two Sciences Po Grenoble–UGA faculty members were included on an unauthorized collage accompanied by insulting remarks and a call for their resignation. TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes strongly condemns these actions, and sharing them on social media is irresponsible.

On Tuesday, March 4, 2021, the University of Grenoble Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes ) will host its traditional forum for professional bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, aimed at all students currently enrolled in BTS, DUT, and bachelor’s degree programs who wish to continue their studies at UGA, in Grenoble, and in the Drôme-Ardèche region. To adapt to the current health situation, this year’s event will take place entirely online.

“Miroir,” a 26-minute documentary film about the relationship between cities and mountains, directed by Pierre Reynard and produced by theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , will be screened for the first time online on February 11. Having been presented at several international festivals and already the recipient of the Global Shorts Film Award in Los Angeles and the Istanbul Film Awards, this first public screening of “Miroir” will be an opportunity for everyone to delve into their own imagination and reflect on the place of the mountains and their relationship with the city.

High School Student Day, organized annually by the “Université Grenoble Alpes ” to help high school students in the academy learn about academic programs and university life, adapted to the current health situation and became a fully digital and interactive event! Here’s a look back at this event, which brought together 7,200 high school students on Tuesday, January 26. One advantage of this digital version is that all resources presenting university programs will remain accessible through June, allowing everyone to make the best-informed decisions and submit their applications on Parcoursup.

A new university library opened its doors on January 27 on the Valence campus of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes. Featuring welcoming and functional spaces, this next-generation library offers the university community work and teaching environments tailored to today’s needs. Funded by the French government, the city of Valence, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and the Ardèche department, it is located in the heart of the Latour-Maubourg block, made possible by the urban redevelopment of the former military barracks site initiated by the city of Valence and its metropolitan area. It pays tribute to the former mayor of Valence, Rodolphe Pesce—after whom it is named—who was instrumental in the development of Valence’s university campus.

The Certificate of Language Proficiency in Higher Education (CLES) was established in 2000. Since 2013, the University of Grenoble Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) has been responsible for the national coordination of this state-recognized certification under a tripartite agreement between the Ministry, the Conference of University Presidents (CPU), and the UGA. Registration for 2021 is currently open and closes on November 26, 2020.

Researchers from the IRD, the CNRS, and the UGA participated in a European study on the sources of fine particulate matter harmful to health, coordinated by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland). Their findings, published in the journal *Nature* on November 18, 2020, reveal the harmful nature of fine particulate matter in the atmosphere due to its oxidizing potential. They suggest that this indicator should be taken into account in future air quality regulations to protect the health of populations worldwide.

Launched on the night of September 3 at 1:51 UT (3:51 a.m. French time) on Arianespace’s Vega 16 mission, AMICal SaT—the first nanosatellite from the Grenoble University Space Center (CSUG – UGA/Grenoble INP-UGA)—transmitted its first image of the aurora to the ground. This is the first in a long series that will help improve our understanding of polar auroras and better explain how solar flares can affect our technological systems.

On October 16, the UGA and the Department of Isère signed a multi-year agreement to formalize a strengthened partnership centered on three major strategic areas: the integration of RSA recipients into higher education programs, the Isère Department’s participation in training future social services professionals at IUT2, and collaboration on exploring the jobs of the future.

Thanks to funding from the Isère Department and the French government, the “Education Hub” will bring together—at the start of the 2022 academic year, in the heart of the Saint-Martin-d’Hères-Gières campus—all stakeholders involved in the training of elementary and secondary school teachers, as well as in both initial teacher education and continuing professional development. Following the renovation of three buildings on the Bergès site, the following entities will be brought together under one roof: the National Higher Institute for Teaching and Education (INSPÉ) in Grenoble, the Lifelong Learning Division of the Grenoble Academy’s Office of Education, and the House of Science in Alpes-Dauphiné. To launch this major real estate project, the funding partners and the general contractor met on Friday, October 16, 2020, at the future construction site.

For the “Resilience” edition of the 2020 Grenoble Street Art Fest, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes is partnering with the Space Junk gallery to invite street artist Rosie Woods. This project, launched two years ago, has brought together the building’s users and university stakeholders. October will mark the culmination of this project with the creation of murals on three exterior walls of the Department of Science and Technology (DLST). TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes campus will also host the Grenoble Street Art MOVIE Fest, which will offer the public new perspectives on this emerging field of art.

As the COVID-19 outbreak surges again in France, it is becoming urgent to understand and treat the long-term effects of this disease. Many patients who have been affected continue to experience debilitating symptoms over the long term, even several months after their infection. The CO-SURVIVORS project is studying these conditions and seeking to determine whether COVID-19 could become a new chronic disease and how best to treat it. The UGA Foundation is taking action and urgently calling on its partners and donors to support this research led by the HP2 laboratory (UGA/Inserm) in partnership with medical teams at the Grenoble-Alpes University Hospital, the Créteil, Avicenne, and Nancy University Hospitals, and Stanford University in the U.S.

Supporting the most vulnerable students or those in exile, enabling specific groups to carry out innovative projects, or helping the Grenoble University Space Center build nanosatellites in partnership with companies—these are just some of the many initiatives undertaken by the Université Grenoble Alpes Foundation, which works with numerous sponsors to promote the success of UGA students. A review of projects as the 2020 academic year begins, marked by UGA’s entry into the top 100 of the Shanghai Ranking and the launch of Grenoble’s first nanosatellite.

The Grenoble Interdisciplinary Institute for Artificial Intelligence (MIAI@Grenoble Alpes) is organizing an event dedicated to AI (MIAI-Day) on Friday, October 9, at the World Trade Center in Grenoble. The event will provide an opportunity to discuss some of the recent advances in the field.

55,000 students in Grenoble are preparing to return to campus at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, in Grenoble and Valence, starting August 31, 2020. This return to campus is taking place amid the health crisis and, as a result, includes special measures to protect everyone’s health and ensure optimal learning conditions.

Ranked first among regional universities and among the top 5 French universities, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes has entered the top 100 of the world’s best universities in the 2020 Shanghai Ranking. Following the strong performance of French universities in the Shanghai subject-specific rankings in June, the results of the Shanghai global ranking released on August 15 reinforce the university consolidation strategy implemented in Grenoble. Nationally, five French institutions are now ranked among the world’s top 100, four of which were formed through the merger of several universities and schools. UGA is the only regional university to appear in the global top 100 alongside four Parisian institutions.

An international team led by a scientist from the ISTerre laboratory (UGA-CNRS-USMB-IRD-Université Gustave Eiffel) studied the first animal fossil found inside a gem-quality opal from Indonesia. Published in *Scientific Reports* on June 29, 2020, this study reveals that these opals can contain very well-preserved fossils—in this first case, a larva from the cicada family. This discovery offers a new avenue for exploring the evolution of life on Earth or the possible emergence of life on Mars, and provides evidence that the song of cicadas was already echoing across Indonesia several million years ago.

What is a university orchestra or choir like? What are the distinctive features of these ensembles? How are they supported by universities? These are just some of the questions that prompted this study, conducted in 2017–2018 among 43 ensembles in 19 university towns across France.

Despite a season cut short by the health crisis, the high-level student athletes at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes have taken the podium nearly 500 times this year at major national and international competitions. They have also excelled academically, and two of them have already qualified for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

With their heads in the clouds, their feet in the air, but their eyes fixed on Earth, Dr. Nicolas Plain of Grenoble and his director Laurent Lichtenstein won the “Grand Prix Docu” for their film “We Must Save the Alps!” at the 9th Deauville Green Awards, the international festival of institutional films, commercials, and documentaries focused on sustainable development and eco-innovations. The film, produced by Ushaïa TV, received support from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes.

As part of its commitment to providing high-quality services for international students, the University of Guadeloupe (Université Grenoble Alpes ) received the “Bienvenue en France 2-star” designation in late May 2020, a designation awarded by Campus France and validated by an independent commission. The UGA thus joins the list of 89 institutions that have received this designation out of the 183 that participated in the process. This certification is part of the international outreach policy developed by UGA.

Acting on a hunch, astronomers at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes have likely solved a mystery concerning young stars still in the process of forming and the regions rich in organic molecules that closely surround some of them. They used the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in the United States to reveal one of these regions that had previously gone undetected, and this discovery answered a long-standing question.

Although the university facilities on the Grenoble and Valence campuses of theUniversité Grenoble Alpes will remain closed to students until September—with all classes and exams being held remotely—some services have never closed, while others are reopening or adapting, such as the drive-through book loan service offered by the university libraries.

TheUniversité Grenoble Alpes honored nine doctoral graduates whose dissertation work was deemed to be of exceptional quality. Eight academic dissertation awards and one innovation dissertation award were presented on May 19.

At age 38, Virgile Chassagnon, a professor at theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , and founding director of the Research Institute for the Political Economy of the Firm, is one of three nominees (tied for second place) for the 2020 Best Young Economist Award. Since this prestigious award was created in 2000 by Le Monde and the Cercle des économistes, this is the first time that one of the nominees is from Grenoble.

The COVID-19 health crisis has underscored the need for immediate access to research data. For several years now, university libraries have placed open science at the heart of their priorities, tailoring their services to meet the needs of researchers. Fully committed to this initiative, the libraries at Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University and theUniversité Grenoble Alpes are announcing the launch of the online platform Datacc.org, dedicated to supporting researchers in the management and open access of research data in physics and chemistry.

A team of scientists and physicians from the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital and theUniversité Grenoble Alpes launched a bioclinical research study on COVID-19 in late March, made possible thanks to the support of the UGA Foundation and its donors. A total of 160,000 euros in donations was raised in two weeks thanks to support from the Air Liquide Foundation, Caisse d’Epargne Rhône-Alpes, bioMérieux, MGEN, Banque Populaire AURA, Compagnie de Chauffage, and GEG.

To comply with the presidential directives regarding the suspension of in-person classes at French universities until September 2020, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes is organizing the remainder of the academic year through distance learning.

To design and launch a nanosatellite incorporating an artificial intelligence algorithm to observe the Earth and address societal challenges such as monitoring illegal deforestation, tracking CO2 emissions, and assessing damage following a natural disaster: this is the goal of the Grenoble-based QlevEr-Sat nanosatellite project, led by the Grenoble University Space Center (CSUG1) in collaboration with the MIAI-UGA Institute and with sponsorship from Teledyne e2v. Scheduled launch: early 2022.

How can we stay at home while still communicating with one another and staying connected? That is the challenge we aim to tackle by creating a website under unprecedented circumstances during the health crisis we are currently facing. The purpose of #UGAonEstEnsemble is to bring the UGA community together by offering students and staff resources they can share to stay informed, collaborate, support one another, communicate, and gain perspective.

Following the announcement made last night by the President of the Republic regarding the closure of universities starting Monday, March 16, 2020, for an indefinite period, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes convened a crisis response team today. An emergency plan has been established to implement this national preventive measure under the best possible conditions for staff and students.

Since the start of the academic year, students and staff at the “Université Grenoble Alpes ” have been collaborating with the Émile Dubois Group / Cie Jean-Claude Gallotta on a multifaceted artistic production. Combining dance, theater, and music, more than a hundred participants are part of this adventure and present *Nous, résidents de la République*. Join us on March 30 at the Amphidice for the show’s premiere, which is part of the university cultural festival, and on April 8 at the MC2: Grenoble.

This European event, which aims to inform the general public about neuroscience research, provides an annual opportunity for meaningful exchanges with the neuroscience community through lectures, debates, screenings, performances, activities, and workshops—all open to the public and held throughout the Grenoble metropolitan area. Titled “The Brain: An Electronic Musician,” the 2020 edition explores the connections between the brain and music!

The Arianespace VV16 flight, originally scheduled for March 24, 2020, which was to carry the AMICalSat nanosatellite, has been canceled due to the health crisis. This means yet another delay for the Grenoble-based nanosatellite designed by scientists and students at the Grenoble University Space Center (CSUG*).

By comparing the spectra measured by the Rosetta spacecraft’s VIRTIS instrument with those of artificial comets created at the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics in Grenoble (IPAG-CNRS/UGA), an international consortium of researchers—including members from the CNRS, the universities of Grenoble, Paris, and Aix-Marseille, and the Paris Observatory¹—was able to identify ammonium salts on the surface of Comet 67P. This is the first time such nitrogen-rich compounds have been identified on a comet. The discovery was published in *Science* on March 12, 2020.

Seven doctoral and postdoctoral students from theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , supported by Linksium - SATT Grenoble Alpes, were honored at the awards ceremony for the first i-PhD innovation competition, which aims to promote national research and support entrepreneurship among young researchers.

On Monday, January 13, 2020, the Faculty Council elected Mr. Jean-Christophe VIDELIN, Professor of Public Law, as Dean of the Grenoble School of Law.

The project by theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , and the Grenoble Academy Rector’s Office is one of the three winners of the “Pilot Centers for Teacher Training and Educational Research” call for proposals. Launched as part of the “Territoires d’innovation pédagogique” initiative under PIA 3*, this call for proposals provides for a total budget of 30 million euros in the form of ten-year grants.

On Tuesday, January 28, theUniversité Grenoble Alpes , and the University of Savoie Mont Blanc will open their doors to prospective students. Some 12,000 high school students are expected at the two campuses in Grenoble and Savoie to learn about the programs offered by the various institutions, understand the Parcoursup admissions process, tour the facilities, meet and talk with faculty and students, attend undergraduate classes, and get a feel for the atmosphere and vibrancy of student life on campus.
