Lecture by Nathan Genicot as part of the "Avenue Centrale: Humanities Series" (Season 13).
The European Union recently adopted a regulation that sets guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence and, in particular, prohibits “social scoring.” Europe sought to distinguish itself from China, which announced about a decade ago its intention to establish a social credit system under which all its citizens would be rated based on their every move. However, in Europe as well, government agencies and companies have long relied on statistical methods to evaluate individuals in order to make decisions affecting them. This conference will explore the issues raised by contemporary practices of algorithmic evaluation of individuals by situating them within the broader history of rating systems.
