OpenYourMine is a Master education project dedicated to mineral resources and sustainable mining activities in Europe. Led by Laurent Truche, professor of GeoResources at Université Grenoble Alpes and member of the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre, UGA/CNRS/USMB/IRD/UGE), this project includes two universities (Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, WUST and New University of Lisbon) and the industrialist KGHM Cuprum.
With the growing importance of new technologies and energy revolution, questions have arisen regarding the future availability of resources of metals and industrial minerals. The project aims at training next generation of mineral resource managers (not only geologists) to develop new active environmental and societal strategy for sustainably harnessing mineral resources in Europe. They must not only be trained to the cutting-edge exploration techniques, but they must also consider the potential social conflicts and environmental constraints on production that can limit or deny access to resources. This exceptional master curricular is open to students having background in geology, mining engineering, economy, sociology and environmental protection.

In 2019, 28 students from 3 universities (Université Grenoble Alpes, Wroclaw and Nova Lisbon) attended 2 weeks of intensive training in Lisbon, Portugal. Students were exposed to the current and past reality of mining activities during visits of ore processing plants, and both active and abandoned mines in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Topics such asrRaw material-energy nexus, communication strategy for mining business or environmental protections were addressed by experts in the field. The direct participation of engineers and managers from both mining companies (e.g. KGHM Cuprum, Almina, Sifucel, EDM) and geological survey (LNEG) provide a unique opportunity for students to discuss today's and tomorrow's needs and opportunities in mineral exploration and exploitation in Europe. Innovative teaching methods such as inverted pedagogy, blended-learning, co-creation of case studies with industry were developed at every stage of the project to demonstrate the attractiveness of mining and to strengthen student creativity, entrepreneurship and skills.

The OpenYourMine educational project is committed to permanently induce an entrepreneurial mindset and to trigger the creative and innovative skills of our students. It also helps students to make professional contacts within an efficient and dedicated network.
