CANCELED - "Mountains in a changing world" : summer program in mountain studies

Experts from a wide range of disciplines will offer a rich, interdisciplinary view of Alpine history, culture, people and environment, in this short program taught in the heart of the Alps.
COVID-19 pandemic update: In light of the pandemic, we are sorry to announce that the program has been cancelled. We however intend to implement this course in the year 2020-21. This page will be updated when the dates and contents have been decided on. Don't hesitate to write for questions or comments!

The program covers topics as diverse as architecture, tourism, climate change, earth sciences, and history.

The course also takes you beyond the classroom and into the mountains in a series of field trips and case studies tied to the latest in current research.

Participants will discover and experience:
  • the Oisans range and famous Lautaret pass: how to do a geological transect; the unique richness of the Lautaret Alpine Botanical garden; sleeping in a mountain shelter
  • the Chartreuse range: the history of human beings in the Alps
  • the Vercors range: economic policies, esp. linked with tourism diversification, and changing local cultural practices
  • the Mont-Blanc glaciers: how they recede...
  • in and around Grenoble: key notions on climate change; the Metropolis and its role and responsibilities, urbanism as a tool for policy-makers, Arts and mountain landscapes...
