Florence Goyet is a scholar of Comparative Literature. Her research interests are grounded in three fields:
- Short Story Theory, with a focus on XIX-XXth-century short story writers in fives countries: France, Russia, Italy, United States and Japan.
- Creative Writing: the transition from theory to practice
- Epic in the Ancient and in the Modern World, with a focus on the Iliad, Song of Roland, Hôgen and Heiji monogatari and Song of the Nibelungen.
Her first monograph, La Nouvelle 1870-1925 (Presses Universitaires de France, 1993), sold over 2000 copies.
Drawing on a corpus of one thousand short stories in five languages, it describes the “tools of brevity” actually used by authors such as Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ryūnosuke.
Its revised version, written in English, The Classic Short Story, 1870-1925: Theory of a Genre (Cambridge, UK, 2014), was downloaded more than 45,000 times since its online publication by OpenBookPublishers.
Her next book project, The Lesson of the Masters - Short Story from Theory to Practice, is a how-to for the creative writing of short stories, based on her theoretical study of the genre.
An alumna of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (France), Florence Goyet holds a B.A. from the Sorbonne in Paris (France) and the Agrégation in French literature; a B.A. in Russian language and literature (Paris Sorbonne), and a M.A in Russian language and literature (Paris 8 Vincennes). She received training in Japanese Studies from Princeton for a year (1982-1983) and then from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris. She obtained her Ph.D. (1990) in Comparative Literature from the Sorbonne in Paris and her Habilitation (2001) in the University of Grenoble.
Before teaching as Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Grenoble (since 2002 and until her retirement in 2020), she was an Associate Professor in the same Department since 1990. She has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (1995), at Princeton University (1997) and at the Freie Universität in Berlin (2010).
Florence Goyet is the founder and director of the Projet Épopée (described at https://epopee.hypotheses.org/), a research project funded by the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, UMR 5316). The Projet Épopée provides researchers around the world with state of the arts tools for the study of ancient and modern epic—a bibliography in 7 languages (700 titles) and a yearly journal covering a wide range of themes, cuurently beeing migrated to OpenEdition Journals (access through our CNRS UMR 5316 site at the moment:http://epopee.elan-numerique.fr/ –and through epopee.hypotheses.org).
