 The consortium of partners

The project is led by Patrick Lévy, head of the Communauté Université Grenoble Alpes, on behalf of the consortium's founding institutions:

  • One university: Université Grenoble Alpes.
  • Three grandes écoles: Grenoble INP, Sciences Po Grenoble and ENSAG (Grenoble National School of Architecture).

One goal: to become a leading global university

The project "Université Grenoble Alpes: university of innovation", aims to create a unique university in Grenoble with powerful international influence, based on:

  • Scientific excellence.
  • A thriving ecosystem and the transfer of knowledge to society.
  • The driving force in educational innovation and students' success.
  • The involvement and commitment of the socio-economic and cultural world and local authorities.
Building on recent achievements (the strong partnership between the on-campus institutions, the creation of a single doctoral school, a common affiliation for all scientific publications and the creation of research centres, amongst others), the partners are committing to creating an innovative, world-class university together, around which the territory will be able to continue to grow. Idex is a springboard to achieving this goal by promoting a multidisciplinary approach and removing barriers between national bodies, schools and universities. The university must position itself as the driving force for knowledge transfer.

Concrete steps

The project's steps have been designed to help deal with two challenges.

Challenge 1: successful institutional integration

Today, on-campus university and scientific cooperation is organised using ComUE (community of universities and establishments), a coordination tool based on an association of interests. The desire expressed in the Idex project plan involves changing all this into a genuine unified destiny. The strategy enacted collectively aims to find ways to respond to the question: what is the best way to go about transforming a university system into an integrated university?

The response is based on two complementary aspects: a shared identity and a unified strategy.

Challenge 2: the support and development of excellence.

The Idex activities concerning research, transfer, education, student life and cultural life are organised around two aspects.

  • The first involves humanities and social sciences. A genuinely multidisciplinary institution will be able to give them the key role that they deserve – they are vital to deal with the scientific and societal challenges of the 21st century. Idex will concentrate on specific methods in order to support the development of these disciplines which meet the requirements of international standards.
  • The second aspect relates to the development of actions taken regarding four major socio-economic issues, at the crossroads of the strengths already apparent at Grenoble: sustainable society and planet; health, well-being and technology; understanding and supporting innovation: culture, technology, organisations and digital technology.
