Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is in the top 150 of the 2021 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, which assesses the commitment of international higher education institutions to their research activities. In the latest edition, UGA consolidates its position in the top 5 French research-intensive universities with a strong international influence.
This latest achievement occurs after the definitive confirmation of the university’s Idex accreditation on June 30th, and follows an already excellent performance in the thematic Shanghai ranking published in the Spring. This reflects the very high quality of UGA research teams, as well as the effectiveness of the scientific policy developed by UGA in close collaboration with national research institutions in the Grenoble Alpes region.

Created in 2003 by the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) selects the top 1,000 higher education institutions out of over 17,000 universities across the world. The ranking is based on six criteria, including the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates among the institution’s faculty and alumnis, highly cited researchers, or the number of publications in Nature and Science scientific journals.
Université Grenoble Alpes boasts two Nobel Prize winners, 9 researchers who are among the most frequently cited in their subject, and 111 articles published in Nature and Science between 2016 and 2020.
