The Shanghai Ranking

Created in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU, Academic Ranking of World Universities) aims to evaluate higher education institutions’ commitment to their research activities. It identifies the world’s top 1,000 universities based on six weighted criteria: the number of alumni who are Nobel laureates and Fields Medalists (10% of the overall score), the number of faculty members who are Nobel laureates and Fields Medalists (20%), the number of highly cited researchers (20%), the number of articles published in *Nature* and *Science* (20%), the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index (20%), and the academic performance of faculty members, calculated as the sum of the five preceding indicators divided by the number of tenured faculty members (10%).
