Organized jointly by the Montagnes et Sciences Association, the UGA, and the CNRS, with support from the UGA Foundation, the Rencontres Montagnes & Sciences are making a grand return for a unique 13th edition. For the first time this year, this flagship event—which blends documentary film and scientific adventures—is setting up its base camp in the heart of the university campus. Join us on Thursday, November 19, starting at 6 p.m., in UGA’s famous Weil Auditorium to discover original films, human and athletic adventures, and scientific discoveries!
Kyrgyz glaciers melting before the eyes of a mountaineer-turned-researcher, a “floating bat colony” at an altitude of 2,000 meters, a Swiss village wiped off the map by a glacier collapse, the polar auroras filmed in real time in Norway and also in France... These are just a few of the images that will be screened during the 2026 Mountains & Science Conference.
New for 2026: FREE admission while seats last – Reservations are strongly recommended.
What's on the program this year
On Thursday, November 19, join us for an evening screening open to everyone, where you can discover four never-before-seen films that take you on a journey through mountains around the world.
Rendez-vous sur la falaise (festival premiere) · An exploration of a hidden cave at an altitude of 2,000 meters, a crucial gathering place for the conservation of Alpine bats.
Gulbara, Guardian of the Ice ( preview) · the story of a Kyrgyz mountaineer turned scientist who had to carve out a place for herself in a field long dominated by men in order to study glacial melt.
Northern Lights: The Great Encounter · A documentary filmed over several years to capture in real time the dance of the polar auroras at the intersection of science and wonder. It has already won awards at the Fleurance and Lumexplore astronomy festivals.
Blatten, Against Nature (festival premiere) · A look back at the collapse of the Birch Glacier, which wiped out a Swiss village in May 2025: between science and politics, discover how natural risks are managed—risks that are making mountain regions increasingly vulnerable.
Each screening will be followed by a discussion with scientists and filmmakers. Learn more
During the day (November 19 and 20), sessions are organized for school groups, with more than 3,500 students expected over the two days.
The Rencontres Montagnes & Sciences will then tour the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and beyond through March 2027, visiting Clermont-Ferrand, L’Argentière-la-Bessée, Valence, Modane, Chambéry, Lyon, Le Bourg d’Oisans, Tignes, Chamonix, and more...
