Already ranked among the top 200 in the 2025 Shanghai Global Ranking, the University of Grenoble Alpes today reaffirms its excellence and scientific dynamism with the release of the 2025 Shanghai Subject Ranking on November 18, 2025. This year, UGA is ranked in 30 disciplines, remains the third-most represented French university in terms of the number of ranked disciplines—behind Sorbonne University and Paris-Saclay University—and ranks among the world’s top 100 in 10 disciplines.
This latest ranking once again demonstrates the strength of scientific research that characterizes the University of Grenoble Alpes. It illustrates the ability of scientific teams to foster collaboration across various disciplines and to produce research that matters on a global scale. These results reinforce the UGA’s international appeal and attest to the influence of its laboratories in increasingly strategic fields.
UGA Ranks Among the World's Top 100 in 10 Disciplines
Rankings: Of the 57 disciplines evaluated, UGA ranks among the world’s top 100 in 10 categories and among France’s top 5 in 19 categories, including three national first-place rankings in remote sensing, materials science and engineering, and geography. It also ranks as the second-best French university in automation and control, electrical and electronic engineering, instrument science and technology, energy science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, as well as in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
It is worth noting UGA’s global standing in the field of artificial intelligence: a newly evaluated discipline in which the university ranks among the top 200–300.
These achievements reaffirm UGA’s position as one of France’s leading research-intensive universities and demonstrate the strength of its scientific ecosystem, which is based on a strong synergy between the university and the national research organizations located on its campus.
Of the 57 disciplines evaluated, UGA is ranked 30 times, including 10 times in the top 100

Shanghai Thematic Ranking Methodology
This year’s ranking covers 57 disciplines in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences, including two new disciplines: artificial intelligence and robotics. In total, approximately 2,000 universities from 92 countries and regions are included in the 2025 edition of the GRAS.
The research performance indicators considered in this ranking include the number of scientific articles published by the institution in a given discipline, the impact of these articles and the number of citations of these scientific publications in other articles, the number of articles published in the top scientific journals, the international nature of the published results (number of international teams involved), and the scientific awards won by researchers at the evaluated universities.
