As the second university and sixth higher education institution in France, the Université Grenoble Alpes features in the QS World University Rankings, published on 6 September 2016, for the first time. It is ranked 206th of the world’s best universities – a position which confirms the excellence of the Grenoble Alpes university complex, a winner of the IDEX Excellence Initiative investment scheme in 2016.
Less than a year after its foundation, the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is already a firm fixture of the international higher education and research scene. It thus stands out in the QS Academic Reputation global survey which, of the six indicators making up the final score, counts for 40%. In this survey, to which some 75,000 academics contributed, the Université Grenoble Alpes stands in 81st place worldwide and 2nd place in France after the Ecole normale supérieure in Paris.

"At a time when French universities are tending to see a decline in their international standings, the Université Grenoble Alpes’ rise in the QS and, we hope, in the future rankings, is a sign that the joint approach we have undertaken on our site to successfully merge the universities in Grenoble, integrate our schools and develop an IDEX project by involving the whole Grenoble Alpes academic and scientific community is paying dividends,", Patrick Lévy, President of the Communauté Université Grenoble Alpes and IDEX project coordinator, is delighted to point out.

In March 2016, the QS World University Rankings by Subject placed Grenoble Alpes in the top 100 for "Earth and Marine Science" (UGA 46th), and "Materials Science" (Grenoble INP, in the 51-100 band), and in several other subjects in the top 200, including "Physics and Astronomy", "Environmental Sciences", "Mathematics", "Chemistry" and "Engineering - Electrical & Electronic".

Compiled by the British firm Quacquarelli Symonds since 2004, the QS World University Rankings assesses the quality of training, research and international efforts of institutions as well as their reputation among peers and businesses. For this 13th edition, 3,800 higher education institutions were considered and 916 ranked.

The most recent QS Ranking follows on from the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) published on 15 August 2016, in which the Université Grenoble Alpes – through the ranking of the former Université Joseph Fourier – has held its ground among the top 200 best universities in the world. The 2016 spring rankings also gave star billing to the Grenoble site. The Université Grenoble Alpes and Grenoble INP were among the top 50 most innovative institutions in Europe according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Reuters. Both institutions also shone across several subjects in the 2016 Shanghai Ranking, not least engineering.
